The panel may determine the qualifications of each application by using the criteria below and reviewing the résumé/s, work samples, request details, and support materials of each artist (or of each team member if an artist team).
Artistic Content – 40%
- Applicants’ work samples, Artist Statement, Resume/CV and any additional support materials demonstrate high standards of artistic excellence as an exterior muralist (15 points).
- Applicant has experience with site-specific, large-scale exterior murals. The Artist's portfolio of work is feasible for this program and shows work of great quality, innovation, and creativity (15 points).
- Applicant demonstrates the ability to translate their own artistic aesthetic to project goals (10 points).
Community Engagement and Impact – 25%
- Applicant demonstrates sensitivity to the cultural, ethnic, and economic background of the participants and the residents of the District of Columbia through substantive experience working with community representatives and stakeholders (10 points).
- Applicant demonstrates in previous projects how the meaning, content, and themes of the artwork impacts the intended audience with consideration of culture, age, physical ability, spoken languages, or environment (5 points).
- Applicant demonstrates adaptability to the collaborative process of mural design and their experience demonstrates an ability to create a work that responds to community input on theme or content. (5 points)
- Applicant demonstrates commitment to the District and dedication to enhancing the District’s mural landscape through completing a majority of past projects in the District. Applicant explains the intent of creating work that services the District through their Work Impact Statement (5 points)
Capacity (Previous Experience/Management) and Sustainability – 20%
- Applicant is equipped with art making expertise and has managed visual arts projects that demonstrate a capacity to successfully manage the workflow of this program from implementation to completion (10 Points).
- Applicant demonstrates the capacity to manage funds for the project demonstrated through the Budget and timeline of past projects (10 Points).
Opportunity and Equity – 15%
- The applicant’s previous works demonstrate shared learning opportunities that facilitate greater participation in public art, represent the community and aim to promote a welcoming and inclusive environment (5 points).
- The applicant demonstrates from previous work evidence of intentionality with engaging a diverse audience based on culture, age, physical ability, or languages spoken in planning and implementation (5 points).
The application displays a commitment to increasing opportunity, equity, and access in their practice by working with diverse communities and by employing diverse artists on their teams. (5 points)
