Activate your arts instructional practices to advance inclusion, diversity, equity and access for youth! In this three-session series, Lee will explore three racial equity principles developed by the Dismantling Racism Works collaborative. Each 75-minute session will merge theory and practice by examining a selected principle and its connection to arts and classroom culture. The sessions will also include time for designing personal concrete action steps. A Padlet with resources for further exploration will be shared with all attendees at each session.
- Workshop 1 (Thursday, April 28) will explore how individualism is learned and shows up in arts learning spaces. We will examine teaching strategies that build connection and community through collectivism.
- Workshop 2 (Thursday, May 5) will explore the ways that paternalism and power hoarding infiltrate arts classrooms and learning spaces. We will examine teaching strategies that offer choice, redistribute power, and build trust.
- Workshop 3 (Thursday, May 12) will explore how perfectionism, urgency, and a faulty understanding of progress shape arts learning spaces. We will examine teaching strategies that center the creative process and build reflective practice for our students.
Alysia Lee receives national recognition for advancing access, equity, and decolonization with leaders, organizations, and communities. Her methods center on anti-racism, creativity, and justice. She is the inaugural President of the Baltimore Children & Youth Fund, and the Founder and Artistic Director of Sister Cities Girlchoir (SCG), the El Sistema-inspired, girl empowerment choral academy in Philadelphia, Camden, and Baltimore. Lee is formerly the education program supervisor for Fine Arts Education for the Maryland State Department of Education across five arts disciplines, where she supported the statewide arts learning community through policy, evaluation, technical assistance, and advocacy.
