Hello D.C. Creatives and Cultural Community!
My name is Indya Wright, and I’m honored to step into the role of Communications Director for the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.
As an award-winning artist and storyteller, I’ve dedicated my career to elevating voices, narratives, and creative work that shift culture...and there’s no better place to continue that mission than right here at CAH.
I join CAH after serving as the Director of Communications for the Mayor’s Office of Community Affairs, where I led communications for a cluster of 14 cultural and constituent offices serving residents across all eight wards. In that role, I shaped messaging and visibility for communities including the Latino, LGBTQ+, Deaf, DeafBlind, Hard of Hearing, African, Asian, returning citizens, veterans, and so many others whose stories form the heartbeat of our city. That experience deepened my belief that every community deserves to feel seen, heard, and reflected in the narrative of D.C.
Before my time in government, I spent a decade building a firm where I’ve had the privilege of partnering with visionaries, ARTivists, and institutions nationwide. From the viral Lion King on Clubhouse performance, which united 40 creatives of color and reached 1.4 billion impressions, to impact-centered storytelling with Sankofa.org, founded by the late Harry Belafonte, my work has always been rooted in community and culture. Whether I’m amplifying grassroots voices or building brands from the ground up, my purpose is simple: to ensure the right stories are told and remembered.
I’m thrilled to bring that purpose to CAH.
In partnership with our artists, cultural organizations, residents, and stakeholders, I look forward to strengthening how we tell the story of arts and humanities in the District: boldly, beautifully, and in a way that reflects the soul of the city.
I can’t wait to collaborate, listen, uplift, and celebrate the incredible creativity that makes D.C. one of the most inspiring cultural communities in the world.
