Artist Statement:
Confronting uncomfortable topics, conveying a sense that the past never goes away entirely, and that change is unending are themes that unify my disparate bodies of work. I frequently configure photographs and text in series to examine gender, family, aging, race, ethnicity, and the built environment. My unsentimental Cultural History photo-collages examine specific sites, uncovering shifting land use, societal values, and often racial displacement. In my Immigration/Assimilation series I document the experience of several individual Jews under Hitler’s reign in Europe and their immigration stories. My Art on the ART bus project commissioned by Arlington County tells immigration/assimilation stories crossing generations and ethnic groups. Recent self-portraits examine the taboo subject of female aging. These are a few examples of my socially engaged artworks created over more than 40 years.
