Job Summary

The position is located in the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (CAH), Public Arts Section. The mission of CAH is to provide grants, programs, and educational activities that encourage diverse artistic expressions and learning opportunities, so that all District of Columbia residents and visitors can experience the rich culture of our city.

The purpose of this position is to survey, schedule, access, research, conserve, and preserve permanently valuable artwork within the portable and installed public art collections essential to records management for the Public Art Department of CAH.

Duties and Responsibilities

Supports the Public Arts Department with registration, database entry, and project management duties related to public art collection records, object handling, and conservation efforts for the permanently valuable artwork and related records of CAH’s Art Bank, installed public art, and other portable art collections. Collects and coordinates the accession of historical and permanently valuable artwork and records into the public art collection. Uploads object information, data, and condition reports into CAH’s content management system to process, catalogue, arrange, and describe artwork placed on loan to district agencies.

Prepares management reports on artwork and records in the collection including photographic documentation for each item. Processes, arranges, stores, and preserves historical and valuable artwork and records in temperature control facilities, boxes, and containers to prevent deterioration and damage. Develops inventories, catalogues, indexes, guides, registers, and other reports for record holdings in the public art collection. Surveys the condition of artwork and records to identify the need for conservation and rehabilitation, as well as recommends suitable programs to repair and prevent deterioration of works and records. Reviews condition reports and creates a list of conservation needs of the collection in order to coordinate with conservators and vendors regarding the care and maintenance of the collection.

Qualifications and Education

Education: Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.

or

Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Evaluation of Experience:

Professional experience must have been in archival science, or in a directly related field of work such as history that involved the collection, appraisal, analysis, or synthesis of information having historical or archival values. The following are illustrative of kinds of experience that may be accepted as meeting the professional experience requirements: (1) experience as an archivist in Federal, state, religious institution, business, or other archives, or in manuscript depositories, and (2) experience of an archival nature that involved research in archival science, or in a directly related field such as history, government, economics, political science, international relations, or international law.

Specialized Experience: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the CS-11 grade level in the District of Columbia government service, or equivalent public or private sector. Specialized experience is experience which is in or directly related to the line of work of the position and has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

The work is sedentary; however, the work may require some traveling to sites throughout the city.

Salary: $80,784 - $103,333; Based on available funding for this position.

Position Designation: The position has been deemed security-sensitive.
