Statement on J. Reilly Lewis, founder and artistic director of Washington Bach Consort

Friday, June 10, 2016

The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH) extends its condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of J. Reilly Lewis, founder and artistic director of Washington Bach Consort, who passed away June 9, 2016.

“Dr. Lewis was an internationally recognized conductor and keyboard artist,” said Arthur Espinoza, Jr., Executive Director of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. “In establishing the Washington Bach Consort, he created an acclaimed institution that performed across the United States as well as Europe. I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with him. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. His passing leaves an artistic void in our community."

Dr. Lewis was a native of Washington, DC and a leading specialist of Baroque music. He founded the Washington Bach Consort in 1977, dedicated to the study and performance of the complete works of Johann Sebastian Bach and his contemporaries. Dr. Reilly also served as music director since 1985 for Cathedral Choral Society in Washington, DC.
