Statement on Fabian Barnes, Founder of the Dance Institute of Washington

Tuesday, April 12, 2016

The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH) extends its condolences to the family and friends of Fabian Barnes, founder of the Dance Institute of Washington, who passed away recently.

“Mr. Barnes was admired and respected by the arts community in the Washington, DC area and this is truly a great loss,” said Arthur Espinoza, Jr., DCCAH Executive Director. “His untimely passing will not only leave a void in the dance community, but in the hearts of those who knew him. I know his pioneering work will continue to inspire young dancers in the District.”

A former dancer with the Dance Theatre of Harlem, Mr. Barnes founded the Dance Institute of Washington in 1987 to offer year-round pre-professional dance training to children and teens in Washington, DC.
