The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities congratulates artistic director, Michael Kahn and the Shakespeare Theatre Company on winning the Regional Theatre Tony Award on Sunday, June 10 at the Beacon Theatre in New York.
Each spring the Tony Administration Committee selects the institution that will receive the Regional Theatre Tony Award based on a recommendation by the American Theatre Critics Association. A grant of $25,000 accompanies the Regional Theatre Tony Award.
“We would like to congratulate Michael Kahn and the Shakespeare Theatre Company for winning this prestigious award that not only recognizes the exceptional work that is performed at the Shakespeare Theatre Company, but also shines a profound light on the arts in Washington, DC, as the second leading theatre-going community in the United States,” said Lionell Thomas, Executive Director of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.
For over 25 years, the Shakespeare Theatre Company has presented theatre in imaginative ways that have made it one of the top theatres in the world for presenting works by William Shakespeare and other important classical playwrights.
