Dance DC Festival Celebrates 10 Years!

DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities Program Highlights the World of Dance

From May 16 to May 18, 2014, the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH) will host its 10th annual Dance DC Festival. The Dance DC Festival was created to highlight folk and traditional dance from around the world and to share it with DC residents and visitors. Events will be held at various locations throughout the city.  A full schedule is presented below. All events are FREE and open to the public.

"The DC Dance Festival brings fantastic attention to Washington's thriving and diverse dance community," said Judith Terra, Chair of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. "Our goal is to always showcase the District as a world-class cultural capital on the international stage."

"Dance is enjoyed by virtually every culture in the world. Whether performed as a celebration or a ritual, all of us have engaged in the art of dance at some point in our lives," said Lionell Thomas, Executive Director for the DC Commission on The Arts and Humanities.  "The performances and workshops offered during the festival spotlight the significance of a vibrant arts community that contribute to making our city a wonderful place to live, work and play."

Beginning Friday, May 16, the festival kicks off with Enchantments of the Eastat the Atlas Performing Arts Center. This program features an array of Eastern dance traditions with a colorful display of Middle Eastern, Indian, Chinese and European flare with performances by Silk Road Dance Company, Ancient Rhythms Dance Company, Golden Universe Dance Studio and Dr. Janaki Rangarajan.

On Saturday, May 17 join neighbors, friends and visitors outdoors at 4th and Pennsylvania, NW. In Dance Around the World revel in the dance vibes created by dancers from European, African and Latin American cultures. Explore your rhythm and style with a grand interactive finale with Viva La Dance! For Asia Moves: Dilliwaali with us Bollywood Style! go online to www.fiestaasia.org to view the tutorial and learn the routine. Join us for this massive street dance party! As part of Fiesta Asia Street Fair, Celebrate Fiesta Asia 25 troupes from various Asian cultures will be featured, including visiting International performers from Taiwan, Philippines, Korea and China.  From elegant to explosive, and subtle to bold, we will present a diverse spectrum of Asian dance heritage.

Also on Saturday, May 17, a series of interactive dance workshops will be offered throughout the day at the Edgewood Arts Center. Let's get Physical!will include Afro-Brazilian martial art, Cuban dance, the latest line dances, African dance, Dancehall Fusion and Beat Ya Feet.

From Jitterbug to Hand Dance will close out the festival on Sunday May 18 at the Carnegie Library. Join us in celebration of Washington, DC's native dance style with performances, instruction and an open dance floor. Bring a partner or come alone, but whatever you do -don't miss this event!
