Project History:  The photographs in their original format were commission by the NASA Art Program to be part of their original artworks chronicling the wonders, risks and triumphs of space exploration. NASA approached the DC Commission on the Arts to build a cooperative partnership with the artist William Wegman.  The most suitable location to display this artwork was inside the L’Enfant Plaza Metro Station, which is close to the National Air and Space Museum.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) was delighted to join the partnership to showcase the work, of a major artist, to be part of their Art in Transit Program. The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities provided the major funding for the murals with support from the NASA Art Program and logistical help from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, Art in Transit program. Collectively the partnership worked to develop a design concept suitable for a large-scale public artwork.
