MuralsDC kicked off the conclusion of its 2011 program with a unique art exhibit featuring replicas of each of the, mostly “graffiti-style,” murals installed during the program and other works by MuralsDC artists. The exhibit is free and open to the public until Tuesday, Sept.13, 6:00-9:00pm, at 1300 “H” Street, NE (the former R.L. Christian Library).

MuralsDC was launched in 2007 to deter graffiti. The program, coordinated by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH), the DC Department of Public Works (DPW), and Words, Beats and Life, positively engages District youth by teaching proper art techniques and respect for public property. Eight new murals will be installed this summer in Wards 1, 5, 6, 7 and 8 by nine local or locally affiliated artists and four DC youth apprentices. Half the murals have already been completed.

The mural locations are as follows:
• 1742 Kalorama Road, NW
• 1213 U Street, NW
• 813 S Street, NW
• 4900 McCormack Drive, NE*
• 711 Edgewood Street, NE*
• 745 8th St., SE
• 1640 Good Hope Road, SE
• 2007 Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, SE
